Euro Mercedes 300D with a manual and cloth seats. Seems rare. A little rough, but perhaps another good investment.

Why not 1987 300D Turbo + manual transmission from a period 240D? It may be more expensive, but more oomph and less issues with lunacy.

That's a $800 car at best.

I think the guy has it pegged too high. That was the base level cloth which might as well be (and often are) taxi seats. I would drive it for a grand, but it is pretty tough as an investment.

However I did see an 85 280TE wagon recently for about the same money in Buffalo NY. Was an auto, but black with red cloth. Never got around to doing more research but a wagon is always going to be more desireable

The tin worm has started to dissolve this one pretty bad... I'd pass. These cars really are better suited to the auto trans, anyways. They can't be hurried at all, ever, for any reason, so you might as well drop it in "D" and just clatter on down the road... for the next 700,000 miles.

For reference, I have a 1983 300D that I bought for $1200 with very little rust and a pristine interior. It needed the vacuum lines to be sorted out and a fuel system purge, but other than that it was ready to go and in 10X better condition than this one.

Hmm, didn't realize that. I've never really checked the market for these, though. Never had a reason to.

I have an 83 300D too, I have considered getting a manual, they pop up here and there. But in SF and just a cruising kind of car I haven't done anything about it, it makes more sense in the petrol versions.

They're pretty great machines at what they do. They're slowwwwwwww... like, get passed by a semi truck at a green light. No joke. They lean heavily, too. But they ride nice, are really quiet, have pretty solid interiors, and will run well for hundreds of thousands of miles. In fact, that last part is a point of pride in the W123 community. The owners are always trying to out-do the others, comparing who has put more miles on their original engines. It's pretty funny. Check out the peachparts forums if you want to see a different part of the automotive community! It's like a weird cross between us in the Jaloposphere and the hypermiling clowns!
